GIVE THE GIFT OF SCHOOL MEALS: NOURISHING LEARNING AND GROWTH
School meal programs provide children with essential nutrition, helping them stay in school and excel. Without these programs, many children must travel long distances home for meals which puts them at risk of missing class.

Whitney and her classmates in Uganda enjoy healthy lunches together.
Best.Gift.Ever gifts of school meals, both in Canada and around the world, help alleviate the financial pressure parents face and provides children with daily nutritious meals. These meals help keep them full and at school so they can learn to their full potential.
In Whitney’s community in Uganda, high food prices mean that many families often go without enough food. “The food is too expensive on the market. That is why you find that some families eat one meal a day,” explains Whitney’s grandmother, Betty.
However, thanks to the school meals program supported by produce from the school’s own garden and local farms, Whitney now enjoys three nutritious meals a day, plus snacks during break times.
GIVE THE GIFT OF TRADITIONAL FOODS: CONNECTING YOUTH TO CULTURE AND LAND

Youth in Atikameg (White Fish First Nation) learn how to de-bone and clean fish.
In Indigenous communities across Canada, land-based education is teaching youth valuable skills and connecting them with the land, waters, Indigenous traditions, and each other.
For Atikameg (Whitefish Lake First Nation located in Treaty 8 territory in Alberta), the food systems program – which includes the food forest, nutrition education, and a thriving poultry program – is stimulating students in many ways: they are gaining knowledge, a sense of mastery and self-sufficiency, and tangible life skills. These are the markers of emerging food sovereignty and sustainability.
“Produce from the garden is being used in the school food program, distributed to community members, and extra food was taken to market in the fall,” reported Darrell Fors, land-based program leader.
The Best.Gift.Ever of land-based meals helps provide equipment for traditional harvesting like fishing, trapping, and gathering, ensuring communities have access to healthy, sustainable food sources.
GIVE THE GIFT OF AGRICULTURE: CULTIVATING NUTRITION AND OPPORTUNITY

Peace (second from right) and her classmates proudly stand in their school garden in Uganda.
In areas where poverty rates are high, and access to fresh produce is limited and expensive, communities are increasingly turning to gardening to reduce family food costs and improve nutrition. Community gardens also act as educational training grounds for youth and create economic opportunities for families – especially for women.
In Uganda, Gonzaga, a role model farmer, is teaching students how to grow their own food – enabling them to exercise their right to food through education and access to sustainable practices. Peace, a 14-year-old student, applies these lessons to her school’s garden, which supports the school’s nutrition program. As a youth mobilizer for her fellow classmates, Peace is now inspiring her community to embrace gardening as a tool for lasting food security and resilience.
By giving the Best.Gift.Ever of community gardens, you can help provide seeds, equipment, fencing, and supplies for a community or school garden, helping to improve nutrition for children and their families.
GIVE THE GIFT OF CLEAN DRINKING WATER: ENSURING SAFETY AND GROWTH

Fresh, clean water made a huge difference for Shasho's (Right) community in Ethiopia.
Access to clean water can transform communities, improving health, sanitation, and agriculture.
Shasho in Ethiopia, remembers a time her community barely had clean water. Their only source of water was a neighbouring lake that was highly polluted, which hindered crop production and put families at risk.
Fortunately, a borehole was drilled in Shasho’s community, pipes were connected, and the fresh water started flowing. Now, children are attending class regularly and no longer suffer from intestinal illness. Women like Shasho are no longer put at risk having to travel long distances and can fetch water right at home instead. As a result, Shasho now has clean, potable water for her crops of teff, maize and wheat - and they’re flourishing.
The Best.Gift.Ever of clean drinking water helps find new water sources, improving access to clean water in communities and ensuring children can stay healthy and thrive.
GIVE THE GIFT OF LIVESTOCK: SUSTAINING FAMILIES AND ECOSYSTEMS

Adnan and his mother feel the positive changes in their household since they started raising sheep in Ghana.
Livestock programs provide families with income, nutrition, and agricultural benefits. Livestock enriches soil with natural fertilizers and reduces waste by eating by-products. Well-managed small ruminant farms also protect ecosystems and create jobs—especially for women.
Adnan’s family in Ghana raises sheep on their family farm to great success. Adnan’s mom Huruyatu once faced difficulties in providing enough food for her family, in addition to paying for her children’s school fees. However, when she received the sheep, everything changed. “These ruminants give me hope for the future, a sound mind because they serve as security in times of emergency,” she says.
You can give the Best.Gift.Ever of goats, chickens, sheep, bees, or cows, providing families with income, enhancing nutrition, and supporting sustainable farming practices that strengthen both livelihoods and ecosystems.
