The Need for Food Sovereignty

For generations, colonization disrupted Indigenous food systems. Today, more than two in five Indigenous children face food insecurity. Communities are working to rebuild traditional foodways and restore access to healthy, culturally relevant food—but they need support to grow these long-term, self-sustaining solutions.

When Jennifer proposed a food forest for Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, some said it would never happen. Three years later, with over a hundred people helping plant, the forest is thriving. It’s a place for learning, teaching, and harvesting—a living example of how Indigenous communities are taking back control of their food systems, on their own terms. From Canadian Feed The Children to Kinvia

Why we changed our name

We work in partnership with 19 Indigenous communities across Canada, and many more communities internationally supporting projects designed and led by the communities themselves.

Over time, it became clear that the name Canadian Feed The Children no longer fully described that relationship. Communities were not simply receiving food. They were building their own paths forward.

Our new name Kinvia reflects that shift.

Kin — family, community, relationship.

Via — path, direction, journey forward.
