FOOD INSECURITY
Food insecurity remains one of Ethiopia’s most urgent challenges, driven by climate shocks, conflict, displacement, and economic pressures. Recurrent droughts and floods have reduced agricultural productivity, while currency depreciation and rising transportation costs have pushed food prices further out of reach for many households.
ECONOMIC PRESSURES
Urban communities are experiencing growing economic pressure as migration, unemployment, and rising living costs strain household incomes. Women and youth are disproportionately affected by limited access to formal employment, credit, and safe income generation opportunities.
EDUCATION INEQUALITIES
Access to quality education remains uneven, particularly in regions affected by insecurity and displacement. Girls face additional barriers to staying in school, including household economic pressure, and safety concerns—making education both a protection issue and a development priority.

AGRICULTURAL TRAINING
Smallholder farmers are strengthening how food is grown and shared by combining local knowledge with introduced climate‑smart practices. Through collective learning and ongoing support, communities are improving soil health, managing water more effectively, diversifying crops, and exploring new ways to grow income from what they produce.
During the 2025 season, a Koket REFLECT Circle established in 2022, increased their harvest by one ton! The group attributes their success to the training supported by Kinvia’s partners , along with sharing knowledge and experiences with each other.

INCOME GENERATION GROUPS & EMPLOYMENT
Community‑based savings and income‑generation groups help participants build business skills, savings, and leadership in their communities. Women and youth are supported to establish or grow their business, creating more employment opportunities.
Meet Yitayish, a member of the LENCA Women’s REFLECT Circle, who used business training and group savings to grow her small retail business, supporting her family and gaining confidence. “I am proud of what I am doing and I am the happiest person with the opportunity I got to work by my own.[...] I cover my family's needs, I live a social life with my neighbors, and I go out to work equally with others,” says Yitayish.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE & EDUCATION
Early childhood care and education (ECCE) support children’s early development while enabling caregivers—especially women—to pursue livelihoods. These spaces also help reduce pressure on older siblings to provide childcare, supporting school attendance.
One ECCE, established at Tokkuma Kurfo primary school, has now built four new classrooms, a napping room, and a school management office. Community members, inspired by the improvements, raised money to establish a residence for teachers, reducing long commute distances and times.

GENDER EQUALITY AND GIRLS’ CLUBS
Gender equality is a cross-cutting priority across Kinvia’s work in Ethiopia. Girls’ clubs create safe, supportive spaces where girls can build confidence, access information, and connect with peers.
Danse, a member of a girls’ club, gained knowledge and confidence through regular discussions and support, helping her better understand how to protect herself and stay engaged in school. “We have a discussion session among the club members twice a month which helped me to understand and protect myself from different harmful practices.” she shares.
